Motherhood: Teaching Kids About Anger Management: A Guide For Mothers (3)

Anger is a natural and healthy emotion, but many youngsters struggle to differentiate between angry feelings and aggressive behavior. Frustration and anger can quickly turn into acts of defiance, disrespect, aggressiveness, and temper tantrums when children cannot cope with their emotions.

When left unchecked, childhood aggression such as fighting, arguing, shouting, spitting, and teasing can lead to a host of other problems. For example, there is a link between rage and violence and academic difficulties, peer rejection, and long-term mental health issues in adulthood.

Show Effective Anger Management Skills

The most effective technique to teach children about anger management is to model how you handle your own. When your children see you expressing your anger constructively, they are more inclined to emulate you. In contrast, if kids see you losing your temper, they may imitate it.

While it’s critical to shield children from most adult worries, it’s also beneficial to give them insight into how you deal with your rage. Share situations of dissatisfaction with your child so that he or she understands that adults, too, have angry moments. The important thing is how the anger is being managed.

You are free to say, “I’m feeling upset that the car in front of us didn’t stop to let those kids cross the street, but I’m going to ensure they can cross safely.” Discussing your emotions openly, and how it was handled, teaches your kids how to express, and handle theirs too.
