“No Nation is Crime-Free”: Akpabio Urges Calm Amidst Rising Insecurity in Nigeria

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called for calm and perspective amidst the rising insecurity in Nigeria, emphasizing that no nation, including the United States, is entirely free from crime. Akpabio made this statement while addressing the Senate, highlighting the need for urgent legislative action to address the country’s security challenges.

He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and destruction of property, citing recent tragedies such as the boat mishap in Kogi State, the attack on a mosque in Katsina State, and the killing of 12 forest guards in Kwara State. Akpabio urged senators to legislate with “boldness and urgency” to tackle issues like agriculture, rural roads, education, healthcare, and youth empowerment.

The Senate President also emphasized the importance of accountability, stating that “accountability is the lifeblood of democracy” and warning against attempts to weaken the legislature. He reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to constitutional review and strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

Akpabio’s statement comes amidst concerns over the resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in the North-East and banditry in other parts of the country. The Senate has resolved to organize a national security summit to address these challenges.
