Sesame Street’ To Feature First Asian American Muppet Character

The popular long-running children’s show ‘Sesame Street’ is set to feature the first Asian American Muppet character in an upcoming episode.

Set to air on Thanksgiving Day (November 25) in the US, See Us Coming Together: A Sesame Street Special. The new character is Ji-young.

Ji-Young, a Korean American 7-year-old who loves playing her electric guitar and skateboarding, will make her debut next week.

Ji-Young won’t just be sharing her love for rock music and tteokbokki, or Korean rice cakes, on the show. She will also play a role in countering anti-Asian bias and harassment at a time of heightened awareness around the issue.

The description continued: “Ji-Young also enjoys playing soccer on her skateboard and rolling down the street. Ji-young is very close to her family and she is proud of her Korean heritage. She plays music with her grandmother. And loves to cook her favorite food – tteokboki. Her family eats together at the kitchen table every night, talking both Korean and English.”

See Us Coming Together: A Sesame Street Special airs Thursday, November 25 on HBO Max and Sesame Street Youtube channel.

Designed to spark audience discussion about anti-Asian racism, the special will see Ji-young being asked to “go home” off-screen. After the incident, according to the Mole Workshop, “Ji-young seeks out trusted adults and friends who unite to help her know that she is where she is.”

The special also features celebrity guests including actors Simu Liu and Anna Cathcart, chef Melissa King, athlete Naomi Osaka, TV personality Padma Lakshmi, and comic book artist Jim Lee.

Writing about her experience recording episodes on Twitter, Liu said: “I’ve had the privilege of experiencing a lot of incredible things over the years, but it’s definitely held up.
