DO NOT DOUBT BUT BELIEVE

Today is the feast of St. Thomas, also known as Didymus. He was one of the apostles and is best known for his initial doubt about the Risen Lord’s appearance, and then his unwavering faith after encountering Jesus.

The term ‘Doubting Thomas’ originated from this event in today’s gospel. Even though he missed the first appearance of the Risen Lord and initially doubted the news, he eventually saw Jesus, and his doubts vanished when he saw the marks of the Crucifixion.

This signifies that Christ invites us to actively and devoutly participate in the mystery of his resurrection, just as he calls us to engage in his mystery during Mass each day. Doubt should no longer be a hindrance, but we should believe.

Once St Thomas touched the wounds of Christ, his doubt transformed into a deep, unshakeable faith, which he expressed by proclaiming “My Lord and My God” (John 20:28).

He no longer doubted, but believed. Initially representing all those who doubted the Risen Christ, Thomas evolved to represent those who confidently proclaim Jesus as their Lord and God, and those who believe in the power of his saving death and Resurrection.

Through the lens of faith, we can perceive Jesus Christ in the Sacraments, in the Sacred Scriptures, within His Church, and among fellow believers. We should have faith that transcends worldly offerings.

With a perspective of faith, we can discern Jesus in any situation we encounter, seeing his hand at work for our benefit. Whether close to home or in a distant land, our faith is cherished by God. He desires to journey with us, for He is the way, truth, and life.

It is up to you. What will you choose? Doubt or Faith?

Happy are those who have not seen and yet believe

St. Thomas, pray for us. Amen.
