Matthew 18:1-5,10,12-14

GOD OFFERS US ILLUMINATION IN OUR DARKNESS AND STRENGTH IN OUR WEAKNESS

Ezekiel, a priest of the Temple in Jerusalem, was called by God to warn the people of imminent destruction unless they returned to fidelity to God. Despite this warning, the people relied on their wisdom, formed political alliances for self-preservation, and embraced idolatrous practices.

Subsequently, Babylon captured Jerusalem, leading to Ezekiel’s exile with other leaders. Despite the adversity, Ezekiel offered hope by encouraging the people to turn to the Lord and presented images of hope for their eventual return to Jerusalem, portraying the glory of God’s return to the Temple through the vision of the dry bones coming to life.

In a contemporary context, we each carry our own metaphorical scroll, containing writings of our disappointments, discouragements, and despairs. These experiences may evoke a fear that our lives will not improve or tempt us to ignore or deny them.

Through Ezekiel’s example, we learn that accepting the negative aspects of life is inherent to our humanity. Embracing our lamentations and woes allows God to work in our lives. The name “Ezekiel” meaning “God strengthens,” signifies the prophet’s admission of his own and his fellow citizens’ sins and failures when he obediently consumed the scroll as commanded by God.

This act of humility mirrors the child in the gospel reading, demonstrating total dependence on God for assistance. What initially seemed bitter became as sweet as honey.

We are reminded that God continues to work miracles in our lives when we approach Him with childlike faith and trust. God offers illumination in our darkness, forgiveness for our sins, and strength where we are weak. Let us embody humility like a child and enter the Kingdom of God, relying on the strength that only God can provide.
