UK Court Grants Nnamdi Kanu’s Family Permission To Sue The UK Government

The family of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu has been permitted by a UK court to sue the British government for failing to intervene in his ongoing treason and terrorism case against the Nigerian Federal government.

Nnamdi Kanu, a British-Nigerian citizen, was taken into custody in Kenya in June 2021 and then transported to Nigeria, where the Department of DSS has been holding him since.

Kanu was allegedly tortured in Kenya before being deported to the Nigerian government, according to Kanu’s relatives.

In a statement released in July, the UN working group on arbitrary detention said that Kanu had been the victim of extraordinary rendition and urged his immediate release.

However, Dominic Raab and Liz Truss, two former UK foreign ministers, declined to comment on whether Kanu was a victim of extraordinary rendition.

The Kanu family has now been granted a court review to challenge the UK government’s silence, arguing that it has prevented any steps from being made to help him.

According to Nnamdi Kanu’s brother, Kingsley Kanu, “The British government is well known for its stance on human rights. I believe it must be decisive when it comes to its decision-making about very serious violations of the human rights of British citizens abroad, especially when the facts are clear, as they are in my brother’s case, and when the UN has investigated and reached a firm conclusion that my brother was subject to extraordinary rendition. I am very happy that the court has agreed that a hearing is necessary to decide this important issue.”

Furthermore, on Friday, September 30, Kanu’s attorney, Aloy Ejiamakor, shared a letter on his social media pages revealing that the UK Court had given his client’s family permission to proceed with the case.
