119 Inmates Escape As Heavy Rains Destroy Suleja Prisons

The Suleja Correctional Facility in Niger State saw a few escapes on Wednesday night due to heavy downpours.

Parts of the prison’s fence were damaged by the rain, which spilled to nearby Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and settlements in Niger.

It was alleged that an unknown number of prisoners took advantage of the chance to flee.

Abdullahi Nura, a local, informed our reporter that the prisoners overpowered the guards and made off in separate directions.

According to reports, several of them threw stones at volunteers who tried to stop them from fleeing.

“The escapees’ actions caused damage to the screens of some parked vehicles,” Nura continued.

Three of the prisoners were reportedly apprehended in Suleja a few hours after they escaped, and other prisoners were apprehended on Thursday morning near Rafinsanyi and the Kwankwaso axis on the Suleja-Madalla road.

As of the time this report was filed, attempts to communicate with ACP Muhammad Sani Musa, the commander of the Suleja Police Area, had proven unsuccessful.

The episode, which brings to mind how suspected terrorists took over Kuje jail in Abuja two years ago, has not yet elicited a response from the jail administration.

The lengthy operation resulted in the release of all suspects from the terrorists’ cells.

Over the years, Nigeria has experienced its fair number of jailbreaks, with the authorities promising to find escaping prisoners.

Years after their unlawful escape, a large number of them are still at large.

Gentle Reminder: Be careful how you use your authority and influence, be wise, and treat others with respect.
