Motherhood: Understanding And Addressing Disrespectful Behavior In Teenagers 8

Hello Great Mothers!

The teenage years can be challenging for both teens and their parents, especially the mothers. It is a period that our children’s brains go through some significant changes, and hormones increase their emotions. They get attracted to their peers and their ways of life, and their desire for exploration and control over their own lives is at the highest level. And all these may make them act very disrespectfully or rudely towards us.

However, as mothers, we need to be conscious of the fact that, it is a challenging period for our teens also. It is a period they are trying to find and build their personality, so our parenting style at this level matters a lot. How we respond to their rude behavior matters a lot, as it will have a long-term effect on their personality.
While ignoring their disrespectful behavior is not helpful, it encourages them to go ahead as that is the only way they can have their way. Also, using harsh words, or reacting harshly while correcting them will impact them negatively.

In my previous articles, we have discussed the causes of this behavior in our teens, but here, we shall continue with the impact of our harsh responses, shouting, or yelling on our teen’s growth and development.

Impact on Mental Health:

Constant use of harsh words or reacting harshly to your teen’s behavior can make them emotionally vulnerable. And this can lead to the onset of mental health issues, like depression, and anxiety.

Struggle for Independence

Our harsh reactions to our teen’s disrespectful behavior can increase their desire to be independent. Thus, becoming more rebellious to be free from our perceived control over our lives.

Impact on Behavioural Pattern
Persistently reacting harshly or consistently to our teenagers’ disrespectful behavior can have a long-term impact on their behavioral patterns. This influence extends to their approach to relationships, resilience, communication style, and attitudes toward authority figures. They may face difficulties in addressing problems constructively.

As a result, we must maintain our composure and seek guidance from the Holy Spirit. Wisdom should be applied as we strategically approach their behavior, aiming to have a constructive and positive impact.

God notices your dedication to caring for your home; He will bless you accordingly. So, be joyful, for a happy mother nurtures a happy home.
