Pope To Make First Public Appearance Sunday Since Hospitalisation

On Sunday, Pope Francis will wave and bless the crowd from a window at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, where he was confined on February 14, marking his first public appearance.

After being sent to the hospital due to respiratory issues, the 88-year-old pope has been fighting pneumonia in both lungs.

“Pope Francis intends to wave and offer a blessing from the Agostino Gemelli hospital in Rome after Angelus prayers,” The Vatican said Saturday.

An oxygen mask is no longer worn by the pope. His breathing has improved after a previous string of breathing problems, and the Vatican reported on Monday that he was breathing independently for brief periods of time.

The Vatican published daily briefings on Francis’s health during the majority of the pope’s hospital stay, including the crucial phases.

The pope’s illness and long spell in hospital has raised questions over who might lead the busy schedule of religious events leading up to Easter, the holiest period in the Christian calendar.
