Fuji music icon Saheed Osupa from Nigeria has decided to drop his lawsuit against Okikiola Badmus, widely recognized as Portable.
It should be noted that on April 14, Portable faced arrest by the Kwara State police for alleged criminal defamation targeting Saheed Osupa. The charges against him included threats to life, incitement, character assassination, criminal defamation, actions likely to disturb public peace, and using abusive and insulting language.
Portable was held in a correctional facility after failing to meet the bail requirements, which demanded N1 million and two sureties, one being the Chairman of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria (PMAN). His court case has been rescheduled for April 30, 2025.
Osupa’s team issued a statement explaining that he pursued legal action against Portable due to what they viewed as a serious breach of intellectual property rights and a troubling pattern of defamation and inappropriate public behavior.
The team emphasized that the lawsuit was not driven by personal motives but aimed to establish a standard to deter irresponsible conduct and foster accountability, particularly among younger musicians. Nevertheless, following appeals from numerous prominent Nigerians, Osupa personally instructed the immediate dismissal of the case.
His team noted that this choice reflects compassion and the hope that this moment will mark a significant shift in Portable’s personal and professional journey.
Saheed’s team outlined three conditions for dropping the lawsuit: Portable must retract his statements, admit to spreading falsehoods, and sign a formal undertaking.
It’s worth recalling that in March 2025, Saheed Osupa reported one of Portable’s tracks on Spotify and other platforms for copyright violations, leading to its removal.
Frustrated by this, Portable lashed out at the Fuji legend, questioning his standing in the music industry.
Portable later offered an apology, attributing his reaction to greed.
