Arsene Wenger Calls For Man United Or Tottenham To Be Stripped Of A Champions League Place Next Season

Iconic football manager Arsene Wenger has urged that either Manchester United or Tottenham be denied a Champions League spot next season, even if they triumph in the Europa League.

Manchester United and Tottenham are slated to face off in the final in Bilbao on May 21, having secured aggregate advantages heading into this week’s semi-final second-leg matches.

Ruben Amorim’s team dominated Athletic Bilbao with a 3-0 victory in the away leg, while Tottenham defeated Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt 3-1, inching closer to their first trophy since 2008.

However, both teams are now certain to finish outside the Premier League’s European qualification positions, with United in 15th and Tottenham in 16th.

UEFA amended its regulations in 2014 to grant the Europa League winners a Champions League berth, but Wenger argues this is “not right.”

Former Arsenal manager Wenger told BeIN Sports: “No. They should qualify automatically for the Europa League but not necessarily for the Champions League.

“Especially when you’re in the Premier League where already five teams qualify.

“I think it’s something [for UEFA] to think about and to review.

“On the other hand people will tell you that to keep the Europa League focused, interesting and motivated you need to give them that prize [Champions League].”
