Police Arrest Man With Fake $1,000 Notes In Gombe

The Gombe State Police Command has detained a 35-year-old individual, Usman Kawu, for possessing counterfeit money.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, announced this in a statement on Wednesday, June 2, 2025, noting that the suspect was apprehended by officers from the Lawanti Airport Division during a surveillance operation.

The individual was discovered with ten $100 notes, which he claimed were provided to him for trading by an accomplice.

“The Gombe State Police Command under the leadership of CP Bello Yahaya psc(+) wishes to inform the general public of a case of criminal conspiracy and possession of counterfeit currency,” the statement read.

On 28/06/2025, at approximately 1404hrs, Police officers from the Lawanti Airport Division, while conducting surveillance, arrested and brought to the Amada Police station one Usman Kawu “M” 35year of Kuji Kwadon Village, Yamaltu-Deba LGA, Gombe State.

“The suspect was found in possession of suspected counterfeit of United States dollar notes, which he attempted to use to deceive unsuspecting members of the public.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that he was in possession of ten (10) pieces of one-hundred-dollar ($100) notes suspected to be fake. In local currency, the amount is equivalent to N1,500,000 (One Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira). He also had N10,000 (Ten Thousand Naira) in Nigerian currency, all were concealed inside his inner short trousers and recovered as exhibits.

“During interview, the suspect confessed to the crime but alleged that the counterfeit currency was given to him to trade by his accomplice name withheld.

“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the said accomplice and to recover more exhibits. Investigation is still in progress.

“The Gombe State Police Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and financial integrity of its citizens. Further developments will be communicated in due course.”
