Retired Police Officers Brave Rain to Protest at National Assembly Gate

Retired police officers staged a protest at the National Assembly gate in Abuja on Monday, July 21, 2025, despite the rain. The demonstration was aimed at demanding their removal from the Contributory Pension Scheme, which they described as “exploitative and unjust”.

Key Demands

  • Exit from Contributory Pension Scheme: Retired Chief Superintendent of Police, CSP Manir Lawal, called on the government to remove police retirees from the pension scheme.
  • Better Welfare and Dignity: The protesters, comprising elderly ex-police personnel, demanded better welfare and dignity, citing their faithful service to the country.

Challenges Faced by Retirees

  • Poor Monthly Pensions: Some retirees receive as low as N18,000 to N25,000 per month, making it difficult for them to afford basic necessities like food, medical bills, and school fees.
  • Unpaid Pensions: Retirees under the contributory pension scheme have also protested against several months of unpaid pensions.

Protest Details

  • Peaceful Demonstration: Despite the rain, the retirees stood firm, vowing not to leave until their concerns were addressed by the National Assembly leadership.
  • Security Presence: Security operatives were present to monitor the protest and prevent any breakdown of law and order.
