Ibadan Residents Stage Peaceful Protest Against Circular Road Land Extension

Residents of Ibadan, Oyo State capital, have taken to the streets to protest the planned extension of the Circular Road project beyond the already marked 150-meter corridor. The protesters, mostly from Akinyele Local Government Area, expressed concerns that further expansion would worsen their hardship and displace more families.

Background

The Circular Road project was first conceived in 2003 under former Governor Rashidi Ladoja’s administration, with land marked for construction. The project was later abandoned by his successor, late Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, and revived by late Governor Abiola Ajimobi, who started construction between 2011 and 2019. The current government’s plan to widen the corridor has reignited tensions among residents.
