Police Arrest Patient’s Relative For Assaulting Female Doctor

The Yobe State Police Command has detained a 40-year-old man, Usman Ahmed, for allegedly physically attacking a female medical doctor at the Specialist Hospital in Damaturu.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, July 27, 2025, noting that the suspect is currently undergoing prosecution in court.

According to Abdulkarim, the altercation arose from a disagreement over medical attention, during which the suspect allegedly assaulted the female health worker with a stick.

Following a distress call from hospital security, officers from the ‘C’ Division of the Police Command quickly mobilized to the scene and arrested the suspect.

The Yobe State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, condemned the assault, describing it as unacceptable and cautioning the public against resorting to violence.

He emphasized that severe penalties would be imposed on anyone found guilty of such offenses.

“The Yobe State Police Command, within the past week, has apprehended Usman Ahmed, 40, of Abba Ibrahim Estate, Damaturu, for allegedly assaulting a female health worker at Specialist Hospital Damaturu,” the statement read.

“The suspect reportedly used a neem stick to attack the health worker after a dispute over medical attention.

“Following a distress call from hospital security personnel, ‘C’ Divisional police personnel swiftly mobilized and arrested the perpetrator. Court proceedings have commenced, and the suspect will face the consequences of their actions.

“Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, psc, fdc, strongly condemns such acts of violence and warns against taking the law into one’s own hands. He assures that heavier penalties will be imposed on anyone found guilty.

“To address grievances effectively: Use Official Channels*: Report complaints to designated authorities or complaint desks in institutions. Seek Redress. Utilize established procedures for addressing unprofessional conduct. Avoid Violence. Refrain from using unauthorized means to seek redress.

“The community is advised to: Report Incidents. Inform authorities about violent incidents or unprofessional conduct. Promote Peaceful Resolution: Encourage peaceful resolution of disputes. Support Health Workers: Respect and protect health workers’ rights.

“The Command will continue to arrest and prosecute individuals engaging in such behavior. Stay informed, and stay safe.”

In response to the incident, the Association of Resident Doctors, Yobe State Chapter, initiated an indefinite strike at Yobe State Specialist Hospital, Damaturu.

The doctors demanded justice for their colleague and urged the state government to implement adequate measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
