Colombia Bids Farewell to Slain Presidential Candidate Miguel Uribe

Colombia has buried Miguel Uribe, a 39-year-old presidential candidate who was shot in the head during a rally in Bogota on June 7, 2025. Uribe succumbed to his injuries on August 11, 2025, after being in critical condition for over two months.

The Assassination Attempt

Uribe was shot three times, including twice in the head, while addressing a rally in Western Bogota. A 15-year-old gunman was arrested in connection with the incident, and two others, including a man who allegedly provided the gun and a woman suspected of providing logistical support, were also apprehended.

Funeral and Aftermath

Uribe’s widow, Maria Claudia Tarazona, tearfully warned that Colombia must shake off its dark history of political violence during the funeral. The assassination has raised concerns about the security of politicians and candidates ahead of the 2026 presidential elections.

Escalating Violence

The incident has sparked fears of escalating violence, with another lawmaker, Julio Cesar Triana, narrowly escaping an attack on the same day Uribe was buried. At least 74 candidates for elected office were murdered in Colombia between 2016 and 2024, according to the Independent research group Indepaz.

Investigation and Arrests

The Colombian police have made several arrests in connection with Uribe’s assassination, including Elder Jose Arteaga Hernandez, who allegedly planned the attack. The investigation is ongoing.
