The Federal Government has approved a 7-year ban on the establishment of new federal tertiary educational institutions across the country.

The moratorium covers universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Tunji Alausa, the minister of education, announced the approval while briefing State House Journalists on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, after the Federal Executive Council FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Minister said 551 establishments were inherited by the current administration, but had to prune the number to 79, following the introduction of new, stringent policies for the establishment of such institutions.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
