Court Sentences Man To Prison For Stealing Catfish And Cocoa

A Magistrate’s Court in Ila-Orangun, Osun State, has convicted a 29-year-old individual, Olaniyan Taofik, sentencing him to two years imprisonment without the option of a fine for illegal entry, theft, and malicious property damage.

The verdict came after his apprehension by operatives of the Osun State Amotekun Corps following a report of theft on a private farm.

Prosecuted by Mr Oyedele Akintayo (Esq.), Director of Legal Services for the Osun Amotekun Corps, on behalf of the state’s Attorney General, Taofik was charged with unlawfully accessing the farmland of Mr Omidoyin Clement at Isale-Osun, Ila-Orangun, on July 16, 2025.

He was accused of stealing farm tools, cocoa, bananas, walnuts, and live catfish, collectively valued at approximately N400,000. The prosecution further alleged that he destroyed a CCTV surveillance camera on the property, causing an additional N300,000 in damages.

The incident was reported to the Ila-Orangun Command of the Amotekun Corps, which promptly initiated an investigation. The suspect was subsequently apprehended while attempting to sell the stolen goods.

During questioning by the Corps’ Intelligence and Investigation Unit, Taofik reportedly confessed to the crime and admitted to having committed similar offenses previously.

In his judgment, Magistrate A.A. Ayeni ruled that the prosecution had established its case beyond reasonable doubt, finding the defendant guilty of offenses violating Sections 81, 390(9), and 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Vol. II, Laws of Osun State, 2002.

Magistrate Ayeni emphasized that the sentence would act as a deterrent to habitual offenders and safeguard the livelihoods of farmers, particularly in rural communities.

The Osun Amotekun Corps reiterated its dedication to protecting lives and property throughout the state and encouraged residents to aid security efforts by reporting suspicious activities, especially in vulnerable agricultural regions.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
