US President Donald Trump has delivered a firm caution prior to his critical summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, stating he will depart promptly if negotiations to resolve the war in Ukraine falter.
In a conversation with Fox News host Bret Baier on Air Force One, Trump declared, “We’re going for a meeting with President Putin in Alaska. I think it’s going to work out very well, and if it doesn’t, I’m going to head back home real fast.” When questioned about the seriousness of his statement, Trump reiterated, “I would walk, yeah.”
The two leaders are scheduled to convene at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage—a former Cold War surveillance hub—for a “working breakfast” followed by a joint press conference.
Previously, Trump informed journalists that Russia faces “very severe” sanctions if Putin does not participate constructively in peace discussions. He further pledged that the US would suspend all business dealings with Russia until the war—now in its fourth year—concludes.
US Vice President JD Vance voiced approval for Trump’s strategy, posting on X: “Grateful for President Trump’s leadership today as he travels to Alaska to meet with President Putin of Russia. Praying for peace in the days ahead.”
The summit is under intense international observation, as both leaders confront growing demands to resolve a conflict that has left Ukraine devastated and Russia increasingly isolated globally.
