Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called on Nigerians to refrain from speaking negatively about the country, asserting that the time when Nigeria was labeled the “most corrupt country” has passed.
During her two-day working visit to Gombe State, Mrs. Tinubu made this remark on Thursday, October 2, 2025, while addressing the Emir of Akko, Lamido Akko, HRH Alhaji Umar Muhammad Atiku, at his palace.
She emphasized that the international view of Nigeria is improving, with the country now seen as a place of promise and growing appeal.
Mrs. Tinubu maintained that perceptions of Nigeria are changing for the better, and encouraged citizens to take pride in their country.
“Calling on us as Nigerians, stop badmouthing your nation. Gone are the days when they say Nigeria is the most corrupt country. You won’t hear that again,” she declared.
“Even when I go abroad, when they hear you’re from Nigeria, everybody’s interested. They want to come to Nigeria. Nigeria is the next destination,” she added.
The First Lady also expressed admiration for Gombe’s natural environment, likening its beauty to that of the countryside in England.
She underscored that Nigeria’s distinctive scenery, along with its abundant human resources, should instill confidence in citizens regarding the nation’s direction.
“We have to be proud. Your landscape is beautiful. I’ve never seen anything like that. You see that in the London countryside, but I’m seeing it here in Gombe and in other states too,” she said.
Mrs. Tinubu connected her message of national pride with the government’s initiatives in areas such as security, education, and grassroots advancement. She also pointed out that traditional and religious figures have essential roles in influencing public mindset.
She further shared that her dedication as First Lady is inspired by a strong personal motivation to leave Nigeria in a better condition by the end of her husband’s administration.
“I’m 65 years old now, I pray I live long. But I’m working so hard so that when my husband finishes his tenure, me too I can walk around safely. That is what drives me,” she added.
Additionally, Mrs. Tinubu was honored with the traditional title of Sarauniyar Yaki (Queen Warrior) of the Akko Emirate in Gombe State.
The Lamido Akko conferred the title in recognition of her unwavering dedication to championing the rights and welfare of vulnerable populations throughout Nigeria.
