Breaking Barriers: Nigeria Launches First-Ever National Menstrual Health Policy to Empower Women and Girls

The Federal Government of Nigeria has made a significant step towards promoting menstrual health and dignity by launching its first National Policy on Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (MHHM). This groundbreaking policy aims to eliminate stigma surrounding menstruation, improve access to affordable sanitary products, and ensure girls can stay in school during their periods.

Key Objectives:

  • Improve Access to Sanitary Products: Make menstrual products more affordable and accessible to women and girls nationwide.
  • Eliminate Stigma: Break cultural taboos and promote open dialogue about menstrual health.
  • Empower Girls: Ensure girls can pursue their education without interruption due to menstruation.
  • Integrate Menstrual Health Education: Incorporate comprehensive menstrual health education into school curricula.

Government’s Commitment:

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, emphasized the policy’s importance in ensuring that menstruation does not hinder the potential of women and girls. President Bola Tinubu’s administration has shown its commitment to this cause by approving tax waivers on sanitary towels, making them more affordable for Nigerian girls.

Implementation and Partnerships:

The policy’s success will depend on strong collaboration across sectors, including state governments, communities, and development partners. Organizations like Population Services International (PSI) Nigeria and WaterAid Nigeria have pledged their support for the policy’s implementation.

This policy marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards promoting menstrual health and dignity. With effective implementation, it has the potential to transform the lives of millions of women and girls across the country.
