A Wisconsin couple discovered deceased in their vehicle each succumbed to a fatal gunshot wound to the head, according to preliminary autopsy findings.
The remains of Rachel Dumovich, 29, and her husband, Brandon, 30, were found inside the car on a highway in Harvard, Illinois, just before midnight on October 6.
A police officer noticed a vehicle stopped on Route 14 northbound near Burbank Street with its hazard lights activated.
Upon approaching the car, the officer found both individuals deceased, Rachel seated in the driver’s position and Brandon in the passenger seat.
Authorities temporarily issued a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents before confirming there was no ongoing danger.
Harvard Police Chief Tyson Bauman stated that while a murder-suicide is a possible scenario, no conclusive determination has been reached.
However, the McHenry County Coroner’s Office has now reported that each victim sustained a single gunshot wound to the head, as noted by Fox News Digital.
The full autopsy report from the coroner’s office is still pending release.
The McHenry County major investigative assistance team, comprising various law enforcement agencies and the state’s attorney’s office, was summoned to aid in the investigation, and Route 14 was closed overnight, according to Lake & McHenry County Scanner.
“At this time, this appears to be an isolated incident and there is no evidence to suggest that there is any danger or threat to the public,” police stated in a release.
The Dumoviches were just days away from marking their first wedding anniversary when they were discovered.
According to a wedding page on The Knot, Rachel and Brandon were middle-school sweethearts who met when Rachel was 12.
“I caught Brandon’s attention by stealing cologne from his locker and running away with it,” she wrote on the page, noting that the two reconnected in adulthood after 15 years of friendship.
The couple wed on October 12, 2024, at Big Cedar Lake in Wisconsin.
On the same day the couple was found deceased, Rachel updated her Facebook profile picture with a selfie alongside Brandon.
Minutes later, she posted a photo from their trip to Greece, captioned: “Forever chasing sunsets. Wishing we were back in Greece!”
That night, the couple was found deceased by police.
