BREAKING: Warri-Itakpe Train Derails, NRC Suspends Service Indefinitely

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has suspended the Warri-Itakpe rail service following a derailment incident on Thursday. The train, which was traveling from Itakpe in Kogi State to Ujevwu in Delta State, derailed at approximately 7:15 pm, prompting the NRC to suspend operations.

Details of the Incident:

  • Cause of Derailment: The train’s brake failure was reported, causing it to overshoot a station before derailing.
  • Passenger Accounts: Passengers described the terrifying experience, with some reporting that the train wobbled along the track at several locations before the derailment.

Previous Issues:

  • Multiple Engine Failures: This is not the first time the Warri-Itakpe train service has been suspended due to technical issues. In April 2025, the NRC suspended the service due to technical and operational challenges.
  • Recent Derailments: In May, a train traveling from Kaduna to Abuja derailed in Jere, further highlighting the need for improved maintenance and safety measures.
