Nigeria Has Recorded 81% Drop In Terror-Related Deaths Since 2015 – Presidency

Nigeria has experienced an 81 percent decline in fatalities linked to terrorism since 2015, the Presidency announced on Sunday, November 9, attributing this reduction to intensified counter-insurgency efforts and improved collaboration between security forces and the communities that have been impacted.

In the statement it shared on X, the Presidency further noted that over 13,000 terrorists have been eliminated during the past year, whereas more than 124,000 combatants along with their family members have given themselves up to the authorities. It additionally mentioned that over 2.1 million people who were displaced within the country have gone back to their residences as areas that were formerly devastated are being reconstructed and everyday existence is gradually resuming.

The Presidency stated that the Federal Government has established a Resettlement Scheme for individuals affected by the conflict, with the objective of restoring communities that were destroyed and assisting citizens who were displaced in reintegrating into society.

It further explained that since 2023, strengthened coordination among agencies has resulted in the capture, neutralization, or effective prosecution of terrorists and insurgents responsible for some of the most lethal assaults in the nation. Over 124 terrorists have received convictions since 2024, while others including members of the Ansaru leadership and suspects linked to the 2022 Owo church bombing and the Yelwata reprisal attacks in Benue — are presently undergoing trial.

The statement additionally emphasized continuing initiatives such as combined security task forces, bolstered border surveillance in partnership with local and regional entities, payments to victims as compensation, ongoing joint patrols, and the exchange of intelligence with international partners in order to additionally safeguard Nigerians and enhance the security of the nation.
