List Of Nigerian Banks That Have Secured Their Licences

Nigeria’s banking landscape is undergoing a remarkable transformation, and there’s a lot to talk about! In March 2024, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) announced a game-changing new minimum capital requirement. Banks are now tasked with raising their capital by March 31, 2026, aiming to create larger and more resilient institutions. Why, you ask? To bolster big projects, strengthen the financial system, and pave the way for Nigeria to reach a dazzling $1 trillion economy!

Customers, investors, and businesses alike must grasp this shift, as the new capital requirements vary across three key categories: International, National, and Regional.

Banks That Have Earned International Licences

With an international banking licence in hand, these banks can venture beyond Nigeria’s borders and engage in exciting cross-border transactions. To qualify for this prestigious status, banks must meet a substantial capital threshold of ₦500 billion in paid-up capital. As of early 2026, here’s the impressive lineup of banks that have successfully secured their international licences:

– **Access Bank Plc**
– **Fidelity Bank Plc**
– **First Bank of Nigeria Ltd**
– **Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank)**
– **United Bank for Africa (UBA)**
– **Zenith Bank Plc**

Banks That Have Secured National Licences

On the other hand, banks with a national banking licence are set to create a strong presence across Nigeria, although they won’t be expanding internationally just yet. To achieve this status, banks need ₦200 billion in paid-up capital. Notably, FCMB (First City Monument Bank) is actively working to raise additional funds to step up to an international licence!

Here’s a snapshot of the banks that have successfully secured their national licences:

– **Wema Bank**
– **Standard Chartered Bank (Nigeria)**
– **Citibank Nigeria**
– **Stanbic IBTC Bank**
– **Sterling Bank**
– **Globus Bank**
– **Premium Trust Bank**

As the banking sector evolves, it’s an exciting time for Nigeria! Keep an eye on how these developments will pave the way for a stronger economy and more opportunities for everyone.
