Tinubu Approves Demolition of Carter Bridge, Unveils N5.6 Billion Reconstruction Plan
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has given the green light to demolish Carter Bridge in Lagos and reconstruct it with a whopping N5.6 billion investment. Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced this on Wednesday, March 4, alongside several other major road projects across the country.
Six significant projects received FEC’s approval, including completing the Suleja-Minna Road, initially awarded to Salini Construction Company but terminated due to poor performance. Only 10 kilometers of the project were executed before the contract was cancelled. The government has now resolved to complete the remaining 71 kilometers dual carriageway, with one carriageway awarded to China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC) at N91 billion.
President Bola Tinubu directed that the road be constructed using reinforced concrete for durability. The minister also announced FEC’s approval for the design and costing of a new Carter Bridge project in Lagos, citing that the existing bridge can no longer be rehabilitated. Technical assessments recommend demolishing the current structure and constructing a new one.
Advanced Engineering Consultants has been engaged for the full design and cost evaluation ahead of the procurement process. FEC also approved reviewing and rescoping the Kano-Kongolam Road, a tax credit project initially awarded in 2022, covering 132 kilometers across Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina states.
