The widow, who wishes to remain anonymous, had built the house barely two years ago as a symbol of her late husband’s love and legacy. However, her world was turned upside down when demolition workers, accompanied by police officers, arrived at her doorstep, claiming the land had been sold to a new owner.
The widow alleges that she was not given prior notice or compensation, and her pleas fell on deaf ears. “I fainted when I saw my home being demolished,” she recounted, still in shock. “I thought it was a nightmare, but it’s my reality now”.

The Housing Development Advocacy Network (HDAN) has called for accountability and transparency in the demolition process, emphasizing that government officials complicit in such actions must be held responsible. “Demolition is the punishment for the developer, but the criminal officers who aided the construction must also be brought to justice,” said Festus Adebayo, Executive Director of HDAN.
