*Abia PHC’s Miracle Twins: A Rare Emergency C-Section Success Story*
A remarkable medical feat has been achieved at the Ohiya Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) in Abia State, Nigeria, where a 24-year-old woman, Mrs. Chikamso Ibekwe, gave birth to twin boys via an emergency C-section. The procedure, performed on March 23, 2026, was a rare success at a primary healthcare level, especially considering the patient’s critical condition due to eclampsia.
Mrs. Ibekwe arrived at the PHC with extreme high blood pressure and seizures, putting her and her babies’ lives at risk. Dr. Joseph Ngene and his team quickly stabilized her condition, stopped the seizures, and performed the emergency C-section, delivering two healthy baby boys, each weighing 3.2 kilograms.
The Abia State Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Uche, praised the medical team for their exceptional work, attributing the success to the recent upgrade of the PHC under Project Ekwueme. The facility now boasts modern equipment, skilled personnel, and functional units capable of handling emergencies.
Eclampsia is a leading cause of maternal and infant mortality, but thanks to the prompt medical intervention, both Mrs. Ibekwe and her babies are responding well to treatment. The husband, Mr. Ibekwe Patrick, expressed gratitude to Governor Alex Otti for improving healthcare services, saying, “I’m so, so happy. And I thank God. If not for our governor, what would have happened?”
The success of this procedure has brought joy to the community, with many praising Governor Otti’s healthcare reforms. The Deputy Traditional Prime Minister of Ohiya Autonomous Community, Chief Ubadire Agoha, commended the administration for making healthcare accessible and effective.
This achievement showcases the impact of investing in primary healthcare infrastructure and training personnel to handle complex emergencies. The Abia State Government plans to introduce roving medical teams to respond to emergencies across communities, particularly in rural areas.
The World Health Organization recommends C-sections for high-risk pregnancies, and this success story highlights the importance of accessible emergency care. With proper care, women with twin pregnancies can have positive outcomes, despite the higher risks associated with multiple gestations.
This remarkable story is a testament to the power of quality healthcare and dedicated medical professionals.
