“Live Within Your Means”: NYSC DG Warns Corps Members Against Flamboyant Lifestyles

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has urged corps members to shun flamboyant lifestyles and embrace prudent financial management as they settle into their service year. The advice was given during his visit to the 2025 Batch ‘C’ corps members deployed to Edo State at the Orientation Camp in Okada.

Nafiu told the 1,634 newly registered corps members that the service year is not a time for extravagance but for discipline, responsibility, and personal growth. “Avoid flamboyant lifestyles and learn to live within your means,” he said, stressing that good financial habits formed during service would help them build a stable future after the programme.

The NYSC boss also reminded the corps members to prioritize their security and avoid activities that could expose them to danger. He reaffirmed the management’s commitment to their safety and welfare while urging them to remain security-conscious both in camp and at their places of primary assignment. He further warned against night travels and associations that could tarnish the image of the scheme.

Beyond finances and safety, Nafiu encouraged the corps members to become ambassadors of national unity by building friendships across cultural and ethnic divides. He called on them to demonstrate loyalty, commitment, discipline, and hard work throughout their service, noting that these values are central to the NYSC mandate of fostering unity and integration.

Earlier in her welcome address, Edo State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Ben-Ushie Frances, said the new batch had shown enthusiasm by actively participating in the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development, SAED, training and other camp activities. She described the corps members as resourceful and diligent, adding that camp officials were working in synergy to ensure a successful orientation programme.

The DG’s visit is part of ongoing efforts by NYSC management to instill discipline and a sense of purpose in corps members nationwide. Nafiu concluded by urging them to make the most of the SAED programme, which has empowered many former corps members to become entrepreneurs and job creators rather than relying solely on white-collar jobs.
