In a circular issued by the Oyo State wing of the NUT, the union said the prolonged captivity of the abducted teachers and learners had created anxiety among teachers, pupils and parents. It said the decision to suspend classroom activities was intended to draw attention to the need for urgent action to secure their release.
The union stated that teachers should remain at home and comply fully with the directive while efforts to rescue the victims continue.
“The union and entire teachers in the country stand in solidarity with the victims and their families as more lawful engagements with the government for the safe return of the abductees continue,” the circular said.
The victims were abducted when armed men attacked schools in Esiele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area. The incident triggered widespread concern within the education sector and renewed calls for stronger protection of schools and their personnel.
The strike comes as authorities continue efforts to secure the release of the captives. The Federal Government has announced additional security measures in the area, including the planned recruitment of forest guards and the deployment of specialised rescue resources.
The NUT said the withdrawal of services would remain in force until further notice as teachers await the safe return of their colleagues and pupils.
