Abia Angels’ Historic Super Six Debut Signals New Era For Abia Sports

The curtain has fallen on the 2025/26 NWFL Premiership Super Six in Port Harcourt, with Edo Queens emerging champions after a fiercely contested title race that went down to the final day.

While the spotlight rightly belongs to the new champions, Abia State has every reason to celebrate a remarkable achievement of its own.

Making their first-ever appearance at the NWFL Super Six, Abia Angels finished fourth with six points, ahead of established sides Rivers Angels and FC Robo Queens. For a team making its debut on the biggest stage of women’s club football in Nigeria, the performance was both impressive and encouraging.

Abia Angels announced themselves in style, holding defending champions Bayelsa Queens to a draw in their opening match before securing a historic victory over Rivers Angels. Throughout the competition, the Aba-based side demonstrated resilience, ambition, and the ability to compete with some of the most successful clubs in the country.

More importantly, their qualification and subsequent performance reflect the steady growth of sports development in Abia State. The club’s emergence among the nation’s elite is a testament to the renewed focus on sports administration, athlete welfare, and competitive excellence currently being witnessed in the state.

Although the title ultimately proved beyond reach, the Super Six campaign has laid a strong foundation for the future. Abia Angels leave Port Harcourt not merely as participants, but as genuine contenders who have earned the respect of opponents and neutrals alike.

For Abia State, this historic outing is more than a football achievement. It is further evidence that the state’s investment in sports is yielding tangible results, with Abia increasingly establishing itself as a force in Nigerian sports.

The 2025/26 season may not have ended with a trophy, but it has delivered something equally valuable: belief, credibility, and the promise of even greater achievements ahead.
