The Federal Road Safety Corps (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which calls for a ₦50,000 fine for anyone found guilty of hawking, trading, or preaching inside commercial vehicles, was passed by the Senate.
The bill, which is awaiting presidential approval, also stipulates that drivers who refuse to cooperate with Federal Road Safety Corps officials during roadside breath tests conducted on reasonable suspicion face a fine of ₦50,000, six months in jail, or both.
In an effort to improve adherence to traffic safety laws and lower the number of traffic accidents, the Senate passed amended legislation on Thursday that greatly increases the penalties for a number of traffic offenses.
According to the proposed law, anyone caught hawking, trading, or preaching inside a commercial vehicle is guilty of a crime and faces a fine of ₦50,000.
According to lawmakers, the clause was added to promote commuter safety and deter distractions in commercial vehicles.
Additionally, the bill raises the fine from ₦5,000 to ₦100,000 for driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Additionally, offenders face a maximum sentence of two years in prison or both.
A ₦50,000 fine, six months in jail, or both may be imposed on drivers who refuse to cooperate with FRSC personnel performing preliminary roadside breath tests based on reasonable suspicion.
The proposed amendment increases the penalty to ₦100,000 for failing to obey traffic lights, road signs, pavement markings, and other traffic control devices.
A 100,000 fine will now be imposed for speed limit violations, which were previously punishable by a 5,000 fine. Additionally, reckless driving will result in a ₦100,000 fine, up to two years in jail, or both.
52 traffic infractions and the associated fines are listed in the amended schedule of offenses.
The Senate claims that the review’s objectives are to improve adherence to traffic laws, bolster the FRSC’s enforcement authority, and increase road safety in Nigeria.
