The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a fresh warning to intending travellers, saying passport photographs edited with Artificial Intelligence or digital tools will not be accepted for visa applications.
In a public notice shared on its official platforms on Saturday, the Mission said applicants must submit unaltered, recent passport photographs that meet the standard US visa photo requirements.
According to the Mission, the use of AI filters, background removal apps, face-smoothing tools, and other forms of digital editing distorts biometric features, leading to automatic rejection.
“We will not accept passport photos that have been edited using AI or digital tools,” the statement read.
“Please submit original photos that meet our requirements. Edited photos will not be accepted.”
The US Embassy and Consulate in Nigeria emphasized that the photo must be taken within the last 6 months, with a plain white background, neutral facial expression, and no glasses or head coverings except for religious reasons.
US visa processing relies heavily on facial recognition and biometric matching. Officials say AI-enhanced or heavily edited photos can cause mismatches during security screening at ports of entry, leading to delays or denial.
This warning comes amid a surge in visa applications from Nigeria, with many applicants turning to phone apps and photo studios that offer “passport photo beautification” services.
Immigration experts note that similar rejections have been reported in other U.S. missions across Africa and Asia in recent months, as AI editing tools become more prevalent.
The Mission advised applicants to:
1. Have photos taken by a professional who understands US visa specifications
2. Avoid filters, retouching, or background changes.
3. Ensure the photo is clear, front-facing, and unedited.
Applicants were also reminded that submitting fraudulent or altered documents, including photos, can affect future visa eligibility.
The US Mission in Nigeria processes thousands of non-immigrant and immigrant visa applications monthly in Abuja and Lagos.
