Trump Orders Lake Ontario To Be Renamed ‘Lake America’

In a surprising and controversial move, President Donald Trump declared on Thursday that he will officially rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” The lake is a significant and expansive body of water that serves as a natural boundary between the United States and Canada.

This announcement was made during a press briefing in the Oval Office, where Trump signed the order, marking a bold initiative amid escalating tensions in the ongoing trade dispute between the two nations.

As he addressed the press, the 80-year-old Republican leader stated emphatically, “We are going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario effective immediately to Lake America.” His remarks were accompanied by a sense of frustration towards Canadian officials, whom he accused of poor treatment and uncooperative behavior in diplomatic relations. “They’re nasty people,” he added, revealing the intensity of the rhetoric surrounding the trade war.

This decision is reminiscent of Trump’s earlier actions in January 2025, when he renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

“The lake change to Lake of America, was something I’ve been thinking about for a long time, actually,” he explained, suggesting that the name change was part of a broader vision he has for America’s geographic identity. “As you know, we took something called the Gulf of Mexico, we changed it, and now it’s very routinely referred to as the Gulf of America.”

Trump continued, elaborating on the idea behind the name changes. “So, if you think about it, we have a Gulf and we have a lake. Now all we need is an ocean. So, maybe we’ll have to change the name of the Atlantic and/or the Pacific. Maybe we’ll change them both.” This statement indicates his inclination towards a more nationalistic approach to geographical nomenclature, suggesting an aspiration to reshape American identity in various forms.

The announcement, however, is expected to be met with significant resistance from Canadian officials, who are unlikely to accept the unilateral renaming of a body of water that both nations share. The implications of this decision are likely to further complicate the already tense diplomatic relationship between the United States and Canada.
