A Nigerian man was given a one-year prison sentence after being found guilty of attempting to rape an Australian tourist while they were both on holiday in Bali, Indonesia.
According to a Wednesday, July 12, article from Daily Mail Australia, Idongesit Joseph Zion was found guilty of the attempted rape of KTR on July 6 at the Denpasar District Court.
Delivering the verdict, Presiding Judge Ida Bagus Bamadewa Patiputra, said: “The defendant, Idongesit Joseph Zion, is declared legally and convincingly guilty of the crime of attempted rape. The defendant is sentenced to one year in prison.”
The court ruled that Zion met the requirements of both Article 285 and Article 53, paragraph 1, which deal with attempted rape, of the Indonesian Penal Code (KUHP). The court also stated that Zion’s acts went against moral principles, which made the situation worse.

“The aggravating factors include clear harm to the victim and the violation of decency values. The victim suffered losses and felt violated as a woman,” said Prosecutor Ni Made Desi Pratiwi.
However, the court took into account mitigating considerations, such as the fact that both the victim and the offender had forgiven each other during the initial trial. As a result, both the prosecution and Zion’s defence stated their intention to appeal the judge’s decision.
On December 2, last year, KTR and Zion met paths at Finn Club on Berawa Beach Street in Canggu.
Zion, the Nigerian man, was accompanied by a friend, while KTR was accompanied by her sister.
KTR lost interest after interacting with Zion and decided to leave the club. Zion, sensing her intention, tried to earn her sympathy by offering her a lift back to her hotel.
Despite KTR’s reluctance, Zion persisted, even going so far as to order a motorcycle taxi online for her.
KTR unknowingly got on the motorbike, which got her to Zion’s house on Teuku Umar Street. It was there that Zion attempted to rape her.
Fortunately, KTR was able to sound an alarm just before the assault. She was able to escape the horrible incident thanks to the assistance of Zion’s friend and her sister.
