Roberto Mancini Steps Down As Coach Of Italy

Roberto Mancini has formally resigned as Italy’s national team coach.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) made the statement on Sunday, August 13, saying Mancini informed them of his desire to step down “late on Saturday evening.”

His replacement is unknown, although the federation stated that it “will announce the name of the new national coach in the coming days,” taking into consideration “the upcoming UEFA Euro 2024 qualification commitments.”

The statement read: “Taking into account the important commitments of Euro 2024 qualifiers (on September 10 and 12 against North Macedonia and Ukraine), the FIGC will announce the name of the new national coach in the next few days.”

The 58-year-old former Manchester City and Inter Milan manager took command of the Azzurri in May 2018 and guided them to European Championship gold in 2020, defeating final hosts England at Wembley Stadium in July 2021.

Since their European triumph, Italy has failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, their second consecutive absence from the event, and have only finished third in the Nations League twice.

Italy also went on a 37-game unbeaten streak between October 2018 and October 2021, a record in men’s international football. Roberto Mancini leaves the Azzurri with 39 wins, 13 ties, and nine defeats, with the Nazionale scoring 130 goals and conceding 49.

Italy’s next fixtures will be against North Macedonia and Ukraine in Euro 2024 qualifying matches in September.
