The Ikoyi Magistrate Court sentenced 26 people to community service for illegal waste dumping in some areas of the state.

The offenders were apprehended by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) for dumping refuse in unauthorized areas between 9:30 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.

This was revealed in a statement posted on the Lagos State Government’s website on Wednesday, October 25.

Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director of LAWMA, stated that the ongoing joint enforcement action has been stepped up in accordance with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s zero-tolerance policy. Muyiwa also urged residents to help by keeping waste bins at home.

“The era of recklessness and disdain for the environment is over. Anyone caught under whatever guise will be made to face the wrath of the law. The exercise is a continuous one” he said.

Gbadegesin urged residents to support environmental efforts by avoiding reckless waste disposal, having waste receptacles at home, and patronizing only accredited Private Sector Participants, and PSP operators, warning that defaulters would have no place to hide.
