Motherhood: Love Your children, Don’t Spoil Your Child (11)

Hello Great Mothers!

Do you want to make your child happy, and so do everything for them? Do you also give your kids all they request for, with the excuse that they must not lack anything good in life? Or in order not to make your kids unhappy or cry you don’t discipline them nor enforce the family rules? Do you even have family rules?

If you are a mother and you fall within any of the above categories you may be raising a spoiled child.

Our babies are naturally dependent on us. They cry to seek our attention when they are hungry and need us to change their diaper when it is wet or messed up. But as they grow, we have the responsibility of teaching them how to do little things by themselves. We must also ensure they do these things even when they don’t feel like it.

Yes, we must love and express the same to our kids. It helps them to grow into well-balanced adults. But when it is becoming too excessive, our kids may end up being spoiled.

Some of our actions that may spoil our kids have been discussed in my previous article. One more will be discussed here:

Apologizing for Disappointment:

It is good to say “I am sorry” to your kids when you mistakenly do something, like spoiling their toys. It is good you empathize with them on such, as it shows that you respect their feelings. It is also a way of teaching them to apologize when they have done wrong. But you do not need to say ‘ I am sorry’ when you are not able to get them what they want. Instead say ” I know you are not happy that you cannot have those pairs of shoes, but it is not within budget. According to Karen Ruskin, PsyD, it’s a way of teaching our kids that they won’t always get everything they want.
