Motherhood: Love Your Child, Don’t Spoil Your Child (14)

As mothers, we have a sort of unconditional love that has no boundaries for our children. But, do you, however, risk spoiling your child by lavishing them with love?

Sometimes giving in to your children’s demands is okay, but when you do it too often, it starts to become a habit and eventually makes the child develop into an irresponsible adult. In most cases, we give in to our children’s demands out of exasperation, tiredness, or pity.

Does your child act out, act immaturely, or throw tantrums? Then your child has “spoiled child syndrome”. This was discussed in my previous article. The causes, behavioral indicators, and long-term effects of this have been discussed in my previous articles.

Can a spoiled child be corrected? Yes! But we have to be determined and intentional.

Ways to correct a spoiled child will be discussed in this article.

Instill Discipline
One of the most crucial things for us to do is to instill manners in our children and teach them the value of discipline. It may seem difficult at first, because they may not be used to being disciplined. But with consistency and patience, we will achieve the desired result. Disciplined children grow up to be respectful and polite adults. They have no trouble fitting into various social platforms. They can establish and maintain good relationships.

Never Use False praise
It is very good to encourage our children when they do exceptionally well, by praising them or giving them gifts (occasionally). However, it may not be right to praise a child who has not done well. We may do this to make such a child feel better about himself/herself or to boost their self-esteem. Instead, you ought to help your children realize that not everybody is equally gifted in all areas. There are areas where they also are good and exceptional. This will make them never be jealous of other people’s achievements but recognize their areas of strength and develop them.
