‘NLC Planned Protest Is Contempt Of Court’ – AGF

“Contempt of court,” the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to halt its planned statewide demonstration.

In response to the nation’s economic difficulties, the NLC said on February 16 that a nationwide demonstration will take place on February 27 and 28.

In response to the widespread hardship, the Federal Government was given a 14-day ultimatum, which ended with this decision.

But in a letter dated February 23, 2024, Fagbemi reminded the NLC of an injunction prohibiting the union from initiating any industrial action. The letter was directed to Femi Falana, (SAN), the NLC’s attorney.

The letter in part read; “I wish to note that government has substantially and reasonably complied with the items in the MoU and it is only appropriate and equitable for organized labour to engage more with the government to ensure the full implementation of same, especially in areas that have been inhibited by unforeseen challenges.

“May I, therefore, request that you kindly implore and enjoin your clients to refrain from self-help by shelving the proposed protests which are antithetical to the mediatory engagements leading to the execution of the MoU, tantamount to undermining subsisting restraining court order, and occasioning disruption of public service, order and safety.”

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
