One of the most hotly contested couples in Hollywood right now is Ashanti and Nelly. The pair announced their engagement and impending first child together in April of 2023, having reignited their romance after more than ten years apart.
As of late, it has come to light that they were already married when they made the news. As per the public papers that TMZ obtained, the musicians are lawfully wed, having tied the knot on December 27, 2023, which is over half a year ago.
The marriage was formally consummated in St. Louis County, the birthplace of the ‘Hot in Here’ hitmaker, however, the documentation is vague on the location of their wedding.
Although it’s unclear, the pair may have been hinting about a public wedding ceremony for friends and family in the past few months. Meanwhile, Ashanti, 43, recently acknowledged that she was taken aback when Nelly, 49, proposed.
Nelly is already the father of Chanelle, 30, and Cornell, 25, from a prior relationship with Rhonda Mack. According to her statement to Entertainment Tonight: “It was just such a beautiful, intimate moment. We were not dressy.”
She said: “I felt like [the proposal] was going to come soon. I didn’t know when. The way that it happened was just so funny. I’m sitting in the bed watching TV with boxers on.”
Ashanti recalled feeling “shocked and surprised” in the immediate aftermath of the proposal. She said: “I gave him the biggest hug and kiss ever. I FaceTimed everyone I know … I was overjoyed and shocked and surprised and happy, kind of, like, all in one.”
Towards the end of last year, Nelly shared that their sudden reconciliation wasn’t “planned” but admitted that they had learned to “understand” each other better because of their split.
Speaking on Boss Moves with Rasheeda, he said: “It wasn’t anything that we planned. We both were pretty much doing what we do. But sometimes, being separate, you understand one another more.
“You could be like, ‘Well yo, let me exactly see maybe what they see.’ We all can be defensive sometimes in our relationships.
“We know we’re wrong but we going to stand on it, you know what I mean? But we are all a victim to that.”
