NLC To Conduct Medical Checks On Ajaero After DSS Detention

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced preparations to undertake rigorous medical exams on its President, Joe Ajaero, following his release from the Department of State Services (DSS) custody.

Ajaero was arrested at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on his way to the United Kingdom for a conference on workers’ rights and social justice.

NLC Deputy President Prince Adewale Adeyanju issued a statement thanking Nigerians, civil society groups, affiliates, and the foreign world for their support throughout what they described as Ajaero’s “illegal arrest and detention.” The declaration emphasized the value of collective action in preserving justice and workers’ rights.

The NLC has also asked for the release of those jailed for participating in the #EndBadGovernance protests, a stop to the persecution of dissenting voices, and a reversal of recent increases in gasoline and energy pricing. The organization also advocates for the prompt implementation of the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act.

In light of Ajaero’s arrest and other recent developments, the NLC has called off its National Executive Council meeting to review the situation and plan the next steps in its joint struggle. The organization called on Nigerians, its affiliates, and the world community to be alert and unified in the battle for justice and workers’ rights.

Ajaero was freed as a result of the National Administrative Council’s (NAC) demands being met and strong pressure from the NLC. The NLC announced that medical examinations will be carried out as a precaution to make sure Ajaero’s health has not been harmed during his incarceration.

The NLC vehemently denounced the arrest, characterizing it as a “reckless abuse of power” and restating its resolve to oppose lawlessness, intimidation, and tyranny. The NLC views Ajaero’s detention as an assault on the fundamental rights of all Nigerian citizens and workers.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.
