Femi Kuti Urges Nigerians To Stay And Fight For The Country

Femi Kuti has advocated on Nigerian youth to stay in the nation and fight to improve it, opposing the “japa” trend of mass emigration.

Speaking at the 2024 Felabration festival, Kuti stated unequivocally that he has no intention of leaving Nigeria, noting out that people frequently relocate to nations that have struggled for their independence.

He remarked, “People have asked me, ‘Shey you no go japa?’ japa to where?”

Explaining further, he said, “Let me tell you about Europe; what made it great? Do you think they ran away? No, they fought. Europe fought hundreds of civil wars, just killing each other. America had one of the worst civil wars in history, which is why Americans still carry guns today.”

Kuti emphasized that Nigerians should learn from the history of these countries.

He called on Nigerians to realize their duty to fight for a better nation.

“We have to stay here and fight for a better country that we love. We didn’t build the Fela Shrine in Los Angeles or London; we built it in Africa. Get your senses together because this country depends on you.”

“Made is a British citizen, but where is he?” Kuti added, referring to his son. He is unable to be anywhere else but Nigeria. He would leave and return if called to work. The shrine would be occupied by whom? My goal is to retire.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
