30-Year-Old Man Suffocated As Fire Razes Kano Store

Suraja Muhammad, 30, died as a result of smoke inhalation during a fire at a popular Vita foam store on Ibrahim Taiwo Road in Kanoon on Sunday, January 19.

Saminu Abdullahi, spokesman for the Kano State Fire Service, stated in a statement that the cause of the incident and the anticipated property loss are still being investigated.

“On Sunday, January 19, 2025, at about 18:30 hrs, the state fire service control room received an emergency call from one of our staff, SFS Idris Isah Charo, informing us of a fire incident at Ibrahim Taiwo Road, Yan Kafifa Fagge LGA.

“Shortly after receiving the distress call, the crew on duty from different fire stations within the metropolitan city of Kano were mobilised to the scene of the incident, but the victim was conveyed to the hospital for medical attention before the arrival of our men.

“On arrival at the scene of the incident at about 18:34 hrs, the firefighters discovered that a house, popularly known as Gidan Alhaji Muhammadu, Mai Katifa, about 100 x 100 ft, used as a mattress store, Vita from Plaza, caught fire from the last floor. This caused the burning of a mattress store, one shop and one toilet, which were all burnt to the upper floor.”

The fire then moved to the first floor of the structure, which included three stores and a toilet. The ground floor, which housed four shops and two restrooms, was partially consumed by flames.

According to the statement, five jets from the state fire department were utilized to extinguish the fire at the end of day.

A Gentle Reminder: Every obstacle is a stepping stone, every morning; a chance to go again, and those little steps take you closer to your dream.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
