According to authorities, a male suspect was discovered dead from what seems to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound after two kindergarten pupils were injured in a shooting at a school in northern California on Wednesday afternoon.
Around 1:09 p.m., the Butte County Sheriff’s Office received 911 calls from the Feather River Adventist School in Oroville. The department informed CNN that it arrived on the scene “immediately with every available law enforcement officer in Butte County.”
Butte County District Attorney; Mike Ramsey told CNN affiliate KCRA that the two injured pupils are kindergarten boys, ages five and six.
According to KCRA, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea stated that he does not think the gunman is connected to the students or the university.
Before gunshots and screams were heard, the suspect was at the school earlier Wednesday, meeting with the principal to talk about a possible student enrolment, according to KCRA.
A spokesman for the sheriff’s office stated that the two teenagers who were shot were transported to nearby hospitals for medical attention. The spokeswoman stated that the investigation is still in its early phases and that the department was unable to provide an update on their condition or identify the shooter.
According to the sheriff’s office, students were being transported to the Oroville Church of the Nazarene, which is close by and allows parents to meet their kids again. In a statement on X, the FBI’s Sacramento Field Office stated that it is “offering assistance to assist our partners and the community during this difficult period.”
