Barcelona crowned champions Of Spain After Derby Destruction Of Espanyol

In a fiercely contested Catalan derby, Barcelona sealed the 2024/25 La Liga title in style on Thursday with a clinical 2-0 victory over Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium.

Goals from teenage sensation Lamine Yamal and Fermin López, along with a red card for Espanyol’s Leandro Cabrera, punctuated a match laced with drama and high-stakes tension.

Barça needed a win to mathematically clinch the league, and they got just that—thanks to composure, class, and capitalising on Espanyol’s mistakes.

Despite the final scoreline, Espanyol came out swinging. In the 4th minute, Urko González found himself unmarked on the edge of the box and let fly, narrowly missing the left post. It was an early warning sign for Xavi’s men.

Espanyol’s hunger continued in the 16th minute when Javi Puado unleashed a powerful shot destined for the bottom right corner. But Wojciech Szczęsny, stepping up with a big-game performance, dived sharply to deny the hosts with a stunning save. The home side earned a corner, but it came to nothing.

Barcelona weathered the storm and found their rhythm after the break. In the 53rd minute, Dani Olmo slid a crisp pass to Yamal just outside the box. With precision and poise well beyond his years, the 17-year-old curled a spectacular effort into the top left corner, silencing the home crowd. It was a title-worthy goal from one of La Liga’s brightest young stars.

The tension hit boiling point in the 78th minute after Leandro Cabrera lunged into a reckless challenge. At first, referee César Soto Grado waved play on, but after communication with the VAR team, he reviewed the incident on the monitor.

Two minutes later, the inevitable came — a straight red card for Cabrera, leaving Espanyol to finish the match with 10 men. The decision was met with furious protests from the home crowd but looked justified on the replay.

Barcelona kept pressing, looking to kill the game, and their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time. Yamal once again turned provider, laying the ball off for Fermin López, who rifled a low shot into the bottom left corner to make it 2-0 in the 95th minute.

As the final whistle blew, Barcelona players collapsed in celebration. The win not only delivered three points but crowned them La Liga champions for the 28th time in the club’s illustrious history.
