Dedication Of The Lateran Basilica – Feast

Ezekiel 47:1-2,8-9,12
Psalm 45(46):2-3,5-6,8-9
John 2:13-22

Today, we celebrate the significance of the St. John Lateran Basilica, acknowledged as the mother church of Rome and, by extension, the world. It is distinguished as the foremost of the four major basilicas in Rome and functions as the cathedral for the Bishop of Rome, known as the Roman Pontiff. This basilica is emblematic of the Catholic Church’s centrality and unity under the Holy Father.

Notably, it has hosted five ecumenical councils and serves as the venue for the Pope’s Holy Thursday Mass each year. Originally constructed by Emperor Constantine in the fourth century, it has become a model for numerous church buildings and signifies the profound historical roots of faith established at a pivotal moment in world history.

In the Gospel reading for today, one observes Christ’s entrance into the Temple in advance of Passover, illustrating His deep commitment to God’s house and His disapproval of those who disrespected it. His creation of a whip from cords serves as an important lesson regarding the reverence due to sacred spaces.

The scripture, “Zeal for your house will consume me,” is particularly pertinent. It prompts reflection on whether our hearts exhibit a comparable passion for the Church and its congregation. How do we engage with the Church’s laws and directives?

A significant scriptural reference associated with the dedication of a church reminds us that “this is the house of God and the gate of heaven.” While many are familiar with the concept of God’s house, it is important to consider how frequently we perceive the Church and the Sacraments as pathways to heaven. Are we capable of looking beyond the comforts of established and well-maintained church buildings towards communities striving to cultivate congregations amidst various challenges?

Moreover, we must inquire whether we embody the temple of the Holy Spirit, as articulated in 1 Corinthians 3:17, which states that the temple of God is sacred, and we represent that temple.

As we convene to celebrate the Mass today at the Cathedral of Rome and the global community, it is imperative to recognize the sanctity of this location, which enables us to experience profound communion with Our Lord, fostering a sense of belonging in His presence. We must permit the river’s waters to bring joy to God’s city.

Additionally, we should remain cognizant of our call to follow Him, to share the Gospel, and to embody the good news through our actions. Ultimately, we strive to partake in His eternal glory in heaven.

We must not become excessively attached to our earthly dwellings, including this Church; rather, we should acknowledge that we stand at the threshold of heaven, wherein we are invited to convey the message of our true home beyond this life. Amen.
