A man accused of disseminating false information that contributed to the widespread rioting in the UK earlier this month was found not guilty by a Pakistani judge, authorities announced on Monday.
The decision was made in less than a week following Farhan Asif’s arrest and subsequent cyberterrorism charges during a raid on his residence in Lahore, the capital of the eastern Punjab province.
The 32-year-old freelance web developer was set free after the judge granted his freedom following a Monday hearing. Six hours after recognizing the error in his social media post, he informed the judge that he had removed it.
Defense attorney Rana Rizwan told reporters that federal investigators informed the judge they lacked evidence to establish his guilt of purposefully disseminating false information.
Asif was charged by the Federal Investigation Agency with disseminating false information about the British teenage suspect on Facebook and YouTube regarding the stabbing attack that left ten people injured and three young girls dead on July 29 during a dance class with a Taylor Swift theme in Southport, northwest England.
Meanwhile, there have been no reports of any violent attacks for some days now and we hope and pray that peace is fully restored in the UK.
