Mother Who Killed Her Son And Ate His Head Declared Insane

A court in Egypt has pronounced a mother criminally insane after she killed her five-year-old kid with a machete and ate his head.

Hanaa Mohamed Hassan, 29, was on trial for the heinous murder of her son Youssef, but judges found she was unfit to plead.

They claimed the mother killed her child ‘in a condition of insanity’ and should be held in a secure psychiatric hospital, according to the verdict released on September 30.

According to the Criminal Court of Zagazig, Hassan was apprehended after Youssef’s horrified uncle discovered some of his body parts in a bucket at the family house in Faqus, northern Egypt.

Police stated she confessed to eating part of her son’s head after her arrest because she “wanted him to stay with her forever.”

Youssef’s mother slaughtered his body in the bathroom before cooking and eating his head and other bits of flesh in boiling water on the stove.

Prosecutors had contended before the ruling that Hassan killed her kid because she was afraid she would lose custody of the child to her ex-husband.

A first psychiatric examination concluded that she was responsible for her premeditated conduct, as she had obtained a club and a machete and had closed all the doors and windows in her home.

She then beat her son three times in the head, killing him, and then hacked Youssef’s body into pieces in an attempt to obliterate the evidence.

However, the court ordered a more extensive evaluation of her mental state, and a panel of court-appointed psychiatric specialists determined that Hassan was ‘delusional’ and had strange ideas that relatives were using enchantment against her kid.

According to the assessment, Hassan had poor insight and judgment and did not recognize the gravity of her conduct.

She saw the slaughter as a simple oversight.

Hassan was imprisoned at Cairo’s Abbasiya Mental and Neurological Health Hospital.

Following her arrest, Hassan told Faqus police that she suffered from a mental illness and did not mean to kill her kid.

She and Youssef had been living apart since she divorced her husband, who believed she knew well what she was doing.

The ex-husband, identified only by his initials H.A., told local media: “When I arrived, the police prevented me from seeing my son because of the horrific scene.

“We separated from each other four years ago because she had land from her father and asked me to leave the house and my family and go with her to live on the land.

“But I refused, and the relationship ended entirely by her will, and I tried to reconcile with her after the divorce, but she refused and stuck to her opinion.”

He added: “My son was the one who kept me connected to her, and I used to see him regularly and bring him clothes and things he needed.

“But recently she was trying to keep him away from me and plant hatred towards me in his heart, so he wouldn’t come to me.

“I was trying to communicate with her family to see my son and make sure he was OK.”

According to his lawyer, Samir Mohamed Saleh, the suspect was stone-faced when she told her questioners: “I wanted to free him and myself.

“I wanted to take revenge against his father and be free. His father keeps coming and trying to take him away all the time.”

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
