Motherhood: Gratitude – An Important Virtue Needed For Children’s Emotional Growth 8

Hello Great Mothers.

In our daily lives, we must demonstrate and cultivate gratitude. As discussed in my previous articles on this important topic, teaching children the importance of gratitude at an early age is crucial.

The first five years of every child’s life are a wonderful time to assist them acquire the abilities they will need to succeed in the future. According to research, grateful people tend to be more optimistic. Additionally, they experience less stress and depression. Thus, by encouraging our kids to value what they have and what others do for them, we help them grow up to be happier and healthier people.

A child who is taught to feel and show gratitude from an early age typically develops into a well-rounded adult with higher levels of self-esteem, mindfulness, and social competence. Studies have shown that cultivating the act of gratitude and being thankful have positive effects.

Below are the positive effects of teaching children the act of gratitude.

Gratitude increases empathy
A 2012 University of Kentucky study found that those who are appreciative are more likely to respond positively to aggressiveness, unfavorable criticism, or rudeness. They showed more empathy and sensitivity toward those who had offended them and were less prone to be angry and take revenge.

Gratitude Enhances Physical Health
Another 2012 study found that persons who expressed gratitude lived longer and with fewer illnesses than other people who do not. Additionally, grateful people are more likely to actively engage in self-care routines, exercise more, and schedule routine doctor visits.

Grateful attitudes Enhance Sleep
Just before going to bed, people who keep a thankfulness notebook are said to sleep better and for longer periods. (Study from 2011 published in the journal Applied Psychology: Health and Well-Being).

The benefits of instilling the act of gratitude in our children at an early age cannot be overemphasized. Therefore we are all encouraged as mothers to teach our children this great virtue.

Today's Quote

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
